MEET THE SAB

Phil Simmons (Chair)
 

Photograph of Phil SimmonsPhil joined the SAB as Chair in September 2018, having been a governor for two years in another Trust school.  Phil believes that education is so important to the future of our young people and he enjoys the opportunity to provide support to the amazing school team that work tirelessly to deliver not just education but a huge range of other support to the students that attend Maiden Erlegh School in Reading.  

Phil has 3 children who are now grown up but undertook their secondary education in the Maiden Erlegh Trust. He is a tax advisor and lives and works in Reading.  In his spare time he likes reading, travel, cooking and gardening.

Sarah Gibbs (Headteacher)
 

Photograph of Sarah GibbsSarah Gibbs has been part of Maiden Erlegh Trust since September 2018, when she joined Maiden Erlegh School as an Assistant Headteacher. In September 2020, she moved to Maiden Erlegh School in Reading to take up the role of Deputy Headteacher (Curriculum and Timetabling). She is now Headteacher at Maiden Erlegh School in Reading.

Sarah completed a Mathematics degree at the University of Birmingham, followed by a PGCE at the University of Birmingham. After completing her training, she moved to Reading to begin her teaching career as a Maths teacher at The Piggott School. Since arriving in Reading, she has taught in a small number of schools and held a range of leadership roles, including Second in Maths, Head of Maths and Assistant Headteacher. She remains a passionate teacher of Mathematics and continues to teach alongside her leadership responsibilities.

Sarah is committed to the education system and the opportunities it provides for young people. She believes one of the strengths of Maiden Erlegh School in Reading is its diverse community, where students and staff from different backgrounds learn from one another. Outside of school, she enjoys supporting her children and going for the occasional run.

Edith Rigby (Vice-Chair, Safeguarding and Attendance link SAB Member)
 

Photograph of Edith RigbyEdith’s initial governance experience began with her children’s primary school. In 2021, she joined the School Advisory Board of Maiden Erlegh School in Reading and is now serving her second term. She is Vice-Chair and has responsibilities for Safeguarding and Attendance. She is an experienced educator in the Higher Education sector and holds qualifications in project management and health and safety.

Shekhar Natarajan (Parent SAB Member) 

Shekhar NatarajanShekhar is currently Vice President- Regulatory Affairs at Dyne Therapeutics, a Boston, USA based biotech company specialising in rare muscle diseases. He has close to three decades of pharma/biotech industry experience.

Shekhar is a member of many prestigious regulatory and scientific organisations and holds Fellowship of Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC) and Fellowship of The Organisation for Professionals in Regulatory Affairs (FTORPA).

Shekhar is well recognised for his efforts in the Pharmaceutical/ Biotech industry and has received leadership awards from international organisations for his contributions in the healthcare and rare disease space.

Shekhar is on the Expert Advisory Group of British Pharmacopoeia Commission (BPC) and was recently appointed by the International Rare Disease Research Consortium (IRDiRC) as Chair of the Therapies Scientific Committee (TSC).

Steven Fisher (Staff SAB Member) 

Photograph of Steve FisherHaving had a long career in industry with a large multi-national company, Steve decided to take on the challenge of being a Maths teacher. He completed his training with Maiden Erlegh Trust and accepted a position at Maiden Erlegh Reading. He has been with the school as a trainee and then teacher since 2017. Latterly, he has volunteered for the role of Staff Governor on the School Advisory Board and for the role of SEN link. Whilst working at the school, he gained tremendous respect for the teaching staff at MER and would like to work with the SAB to help the school continue to be successful. He hopes to use his varied experiences in management allied to his knowledge of the school to good effect.

Marie Withers 

Photograph of Marie WithersAs a SAB Member at Maiden Erlegh Reading, Marie hopes to bring a unique blend of lived experience, professional expertise, and heartfelt commitment. She is passionate about contributing to the school’s continued development and supporting its mission to help every student realise their full potential.  She went to secondary school just across from MER and her brothers went to secondary school where MER is now, formally known as Alfred Sutton.   Having grown up locally, she has seen first-hand the important role that education and supportive environments play in shaping the lives of young people. This personal connection inspires her desire to give back through service and active participation in initiatives that strengthen the community.

Marie strongly believes that education and opportunity can transform lives, just as they transformed hers and she is proud to serve and support the school, its staff, and its students in any way she can.
