Primary Transition - year 6-7
Transition to Secondary School – Information for Families
The move to secondary school can feel daunting for both children and their parents. At Maiden Erlegh School in Reading (MER), we are committed to making the transition as smooth and reassuring as possible for every student.
Transition Information Evening
We are delighted to invite all parents and Year 6 students joining us in September to our Transition Information Evening on Monday 23 March 2026 at 5:30pm. During this event, you will receive important information about uniform, key dates, and the data we need to collect for you and your child. It is a valuable opportunity to ask questions and begin to feel part of our school community.
Working Closely with Primary Schools
We maintain strong links with all of our feeder primary schools to ensure a thorough exchange of information about each child. This helps us begin to understand every student as an individual before they arrive, allowing us to plan appropriate support and make the transition as comfortable as possible. This collaborative communication continues right up until your child starts with us in September.
Meet a Member of SLT
Every student and their parent/carer will be invited to a 10‑minute meeting with a member of our Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This conversation gives you the chance to raise any questions you may have, while also helping us learn more about your child ahead of their start in September.
Induction Days
All new students will receive a direct invitation from us to attend an Induction Day on Tuesday 23 June, where they will experience a typical day at secondary school, meet other pupils, and take part in taster sessions.
Before this, we will hold our popular Family BBQ for new Year 7 students and their families on Monday 22 June. More details will be shared closer to the time.
Regular Communication
From the moment we are notified that your child is joining MER, we will be in regular contact with you. Our aim is to ensure you feel well‑informed and supported throughout the transition process, and we welcome communication from you at any stage. We believe strong partnerships with families are key to a successful start to secondary school.
Year 7 Parents’ Information Evening
Early in the first term, once your child has begun to settle, we will invite you to a Year 7 Parents’ Information Evening. This event provides the opportunity to formally meet your child’s tutor and to connect with other parents in the year group. It is a valuable part of fostering the positive relationships that support our students throughout their time with us.
